Yes, it’s Purim Katan tonight / tomorrow.

So, what do we need to know?

The Gemara in Megillah 6b discusses the topic. Learn the topic there for a greater understanding.

The Gemarah concludes that in fact Adar Sheni is the actual Adar we keep with regards to the Mitzvot of Purim, as it is the Adar that is followed by Nissan and we don’t want to separate the ‘Geulah’ of Purim and the ‘Geulah’ of Pesach.

Here are 5 Halachot you need to bear in mind for Purim Katan:

  1. The Ramah, Orach Chayim 796: He firstly says there is no minhag to drink and have a proper Purim Seudah on Purim Katan. He then adds that there is an opinion to have a little more in your meal –  in order to keep the ‘strict ones’ happy. Rav Chayim Soloveitchik from Ramat Bet Shemesh told me when I discussed the topic with him, that his father, Ha’Rav Aharon Soloveitchik made sure to have a nicer, more elaborate meal on Purim Katan – although it wasn’t like a proper Purim Seudah.
  2. No Tachanun / No ‘Lamenatzeach’ / No Hespedim or Taaniyot – It is debated though if one can give a Hesped on Purim Katan in certain circumstances.
  3. Regular Halachot of Aveilut apply on Purim Katan – Shivah not interrupted etc.
  4. Purim Katan in Jerusalem is on the 14th.
  5. These above Halachot apply to Shushan Purim Katan tomorrow.
